Amsterdam's port is an integral part of the city of Amsterdam. It has helped make the city great through location, knowledge and composition of industry. Over the next few years, the port will undergo a major transition to become the 'battery of the region' to provide the city with clean energy. How? By reducing the use of fossil fuels. And by focusing on more sustainable and circular activities. Also, the port provides space for the growing city as a place to live and work.
The Port of Amsterdam
The Port of Amsterdam is an international center of trade, logistics and production. Strategically located on the North Sea, connected to the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and thus close to major European markets and production centers.
For eight centuries, the port has been a source of work and prosperity for the region. Besides being a modern logistics center, the port area is an important location for some important basic industries, such as metal, food and chemical industries. We also see growing activity there in the "manufacturing industry": some large shipyards of repute build and renovate large ocean-going vessels. As they have actually been doing for centuries, since the construction of VOC ships.
In short, a port to be proud of! And we are equally proud to take you aboard and show you the port.
Coal-free by 2030
For electricity generation, sufficient alternatives are coming on the market. As a result, the port authority is preparing for a coal-free future starting in 2030.
Despite the transition to new energy sources, fossil fuels continue to play an important role for the time being. The existing oil terminals continue to invest in making oil transshipment more sustainable and as clean as possible through new techniques. Thanks to the knowledge and infrastructure of these companies, investments can be made in processing sustainable energy flows and biofuels.
The energy transition
In order for the port to operate and produce cleaner, there has been a commitment to circular production & energy transition. For example, the Waste Energy Company makes new energy from waste incineration. Waternet's sewage treatment plant has been relocated to the port area. And many companies recycle waste to make new raw materials. From car tires to rubber granulate, from green waste to compost. Of great value to the metropolitan region!
The Port Authority is investing with the municipality and its partners in the production of renewable electricity (including solar and wind), biofuels, and the development of electricity storage.
Port of the future
Innovative services and techniques are needed to anticipate future developments now. The Port Authority is working with various parties on:
- Space for startups
The port is making plenty of room for startups and scale ups in the field of new circular and biobased fuels. The port incubator Prodock is being expanded with a second facility. - Digital port
By making smart use of data, shipping traffic can be handled faster, smarter and cleaner. By using sensors, there is better insight into the occupancy of quays, buoys and berths. Which yields gains in terms of time, fuel and flow and fewer emissions. - Greenlane
Companies with sustainable, innovative concepts are being given space. The green carpet is being laid out for these companies by making applying for permits faster and easier. - Bigger ships, cleaner ships
Since 2016, the city, region and national government have been working on a new, larger sea lock at IJmuiden. This will also make the ports accessible to the ever larger ships. The IJmuiden sea lock will be completed in early 2022.
